Bulgaria’s bottled water market leader Devin JSC is now a certified CO2 neutral company, receiving a label issued by the international climate advisory organisation CO2logic and validated by the accredited and independent certification body Vinçotte. Devin JSC is the first Bulgarian bottled water company to achieve carbon neutrality and it covers both company and product level.
“We’re exceptionally proud to announce achievement of such an ambitious milestone. This means that our products are 100% climate neutral across the entire product life cycle: from the transport of materials to our factory to the production of our waters to the delivery to all points of sale across the country. Bulgarian consumers can help drive change by purchasing products from companies committed to help combat the world’s climate problem”, said Petya Manastirska, Sustainability and Quality Manager at Devin JSC.
This carbon neutral milestone was not achieved overnight. To become carbon neutral, Devin first calculated its full carbon footprint from manufacturing and production through finished product delivery in 2019 and took specific steps to avoid and reduce the greater part of its emissions. As evident by the first sustainability report of the company, issued in mid-2020, per litre bottled, energy consumption fell by 5,4% in just one year. The plant in Devin also started running on 100% green electricity, resulting in cuts of more than 6000 tons of CO2 on a yearly basis, (-18 % of Devin’s total CO2 footprint). The company is optimizing its storage, loading and transport processes and has revised its purchasing policy to favour local suppliers for a shorter circuit of goods and materials. As of 2019, 55% of suppliers were located in the region of Devin city and all of the strategic suppliers are within a 500-km radius of the factory. What is more, 80% of these strategic suppliers are certified by EcoVadis, an independent global platform used for sustainable procurement. For more than a decade DEVIN packaging has been refined through light-weighting and eco-design, and all bottles continue to be 100% recyclable, including the cap and label.
To offset the amount of unavoidable emissions from distribution in order to achieve climate neutrality, Devin JSC purchases verified carbon credits on green energy. The investment also stays local and is into the largest wind farm in Bulgaria – St. Nikola Wind Farm, managed by AES.

This opportunity is realized with the support of the three largest production companies registered in the territory of Devin Municipality – the leader in the bottled water market in Bulgaria Devin EAD, the mineral water bottling plant TPK Mihalkovo and the Mechanical Plant. The profession of Automation Technician has a shortage of skilled personnel in the Devin region and the demand from companies is growing. Also, the profession is protected within the meaning of the Vocational Education and Training Act. The three companies come together, driven by the desire to create a sustainable, hands-on educational program for students in Devin and the surrounding area. They will provide additional knowledge, qualifications and career opportunities for the students in a real business environment.
The three companies in the region will provide a monthly scholarship for each child. For the nine children, paid internships are also planned at the companies’ manufacturing facilities. Talks are underway to provide hostels for students who do not live in Devin. Together with the school management, the companies are exploring the possibilities of repairing and creating the conditions to meet the daily home needs of each student. After completing their secondary education, with excellent performance and mutual interest, children will be given the opportunity for professional development in one of the three companies.

About Devin JSC
Since its creation in 1992, Devin JSC has been a leader in the bottled water market in Bulgaria. The springs and bottling plant are located in an ecologically clean area in the Devin region, in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, where products with the brand DEVIN come from – spring, mineral and carbonated water, as well as Divna table water. The company is the exclusive distributor of Red Bull energy drinks and Granini fruit juices for Bulgaria.
The company is based in Sofia and has its own sales and distribution network with national coverage. Devin JSC is a responsible corporate citizen who invests in the economic, social and cultural development of society through initiatives aimed at regional development, environmental protection and education.
As of 2017, the company is part of the Belgian Spadel Group, a leading bottled water producer in Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), the United Kingdom and France.]]>
The award is a recognition by the business that the winner has distinguished itself on the market with its efforts to develop the FMCG business, offering innovative products and investing resources in the development of society.
The evaluation criteria in the Best Producer Category included company’s results in terms of sales and profitability, category development, executed marketing campaigns, rating from partners, and product innovation.
The winners for the year 2019 were selected in 7 categories, including “Best Producer” (winner – DEVIN), “Best Social Responsibility Campaign” (Lidl Bulgaria), “Best New Product in Food” (RiceUp!), “Best Local Retailer” (Fantastico), “Best International Retailer” (Lidl Bulgaria) and others.]]>
DEVIN has been awarded for the strong performance of its brands, which have been the preferred choice for millions of Bulgarian consumers for years. The company is a leader in the bottled water sector in Bulgaria with nearly 38% market share (AC Nielsen, YTD September 2018), offering natural mineral, spring and carbonated water under the DEVIN brand, and is also a distribution partner for Red Bull and Granini.
Nominated brands in the survey are rated by sectors in 27 categories, including cars, Internet, restaurants and cafes, soft drinks, wines, coffee, leisure and entertainment, telecommunications and more.
The methodology for selecting and evaluating brands is universal to all countries implementing the program. The selective process takes place in two stages: by confidential voting of an independent expert jury and by national online voting. A partner of Superbrands in conducting the national online consumer poll is the Market Research Institute GfK Bulgaria.
In the vote of the users in the Bulgarian edition of Superbrands 2019, a total of 2,195 men and women, urban residents using the Internet, participated. The highest share among participants is 36-45 years (34%), followed by 26-35 years (31%) and over 45 years (24%).
The data show that care for the consumer and the origin of the brand are the two main criteria that participants take into account when choosing which brand to buy.
55% of online voting would pay up to 25% extra for their favorite brand, with 31% willing to pay up to 10% extra. 6% would even pay double for their favorite brand, while a quarter (23%) of the participants would not pay extra.
However, even when looking for the best price, it is important for the brand to be liked by the consumer (according to 79% of the online rating). Among the key characteristics defining the purchase of exclusive brands are also the quality and security of the product, especially when the consumer is not well acquainted with the good or the service.
The company, a leading producer of natural mineral and spring water, will continue to legitimately develop and impose the brand on the Bulgarian market, as it has done since 1994 when the word mark was registered. Magistrates state that the word mark Devin fully complies with all the applicable legal requirements, it has been registered in accordance with national and international law and does not contradict in any way to the public order and good morals.
With its decision from 11.02.2019, the Supreme Administrative Court completely rejects the claim for the obliteration of the word mark Devin, submitted by Tabakov Consult Ltd. The Court ruled the appeal was fully ungrounded. The Supreme Administrative Court is the third and the last instance that rejects the claim of Tabakov Consult Ltd. dated from February 2014 for the obliteration of Devin word mark, after being rejected initially by the Bulgarian Patent Office, and subsequently by the Administrative Court of Sofia City.
In their final decision, magistrates pointed out that the Devin word mark has been used in full compliance with the good commercial practice in the sector. The Court finds that both in its registration in 1994 and its two subsequent renewals, the Patent Office has consistently held that the mark has been correctly registered and complies with all legal requirements.
Magistrates also find no reason for the word mark Devin – the name of a town in Bulgaria and the name of a deposit – to be perceived by the consumer as contrary to public order or good morals. “The recognized distinctiveness of the brand leads to the conclusion that the consumer will not accept its use as improper or violating public order”, the Court notes. “The Devin expression does not itself produce a direct message that would have any direct discrediting effect on other producers of goods”, the decision says.
In conclusion, the Court rules that the word mark Devin is not contrary to the legal requirements, does not in any way violate public order and good morals and does not create legal uncertainty. On the contrary, the Court determines the use of the mark as completely legal considering the adherence of its registration and the evidence provided by DEVIN JSC for its concession and the systematic investment in the development of the deposit and the advertising of bottled water under the Devin brand.
For more than 20 years, DEVIN JSC is an example of a responsible leadership and long-term commitment to the development of the sector. The company invests in educational and social campaigns, product innovations and new technologies, and is also engaged with the protection of environment and natural resources in the region where it operates in. Healthy hydration is part of the company’s corporate mission and its key priority in offering high-quality products and caring for the society.]]>
This summer, DEVIN and ENERGY Radio joined together to fight summer dehydration and high temperatures. As part of the initiative, the smiling ENERGY promo girls distributed exactly 2 225 liters of bottled water in Varna, Burgas and Sofia.
The teams of DEVIN and ENERGY Radio chose some of the busiest intersections, distributing water in the peak hours to help drivers recharge and hydrate on the move with positive mood and cold mineral water.
Every day, during their stay in the city, residents and guests of Varna, Bourgas and Sofia, who were fortunate enough to meet the smiling ENERGY girls, while waiting for the green signal at the traffic light, received refreshing mineral water in DEVIN’s unique Water2GO bottle. Among them were bus drivers, policemen, taxi drivers, bicycle drivers and even… drivers of red ferries! The girls of Radio ENERGY gave a bottle of water even to representatives of Sofiyska Voda!
DEVIN Water2GO is the product which the company has created specifically for people on the move in order to provide them with added security and convenience. With the unique SmartSeal ™ cap created in Norway, the new bottle is the first of its kind on the Bulgarian market and is perfect for active situations in everyday life. The cap does not drop, it is safe to consume and easy to open. This makes DEVIN Water2GO extremely suitable for consumption while driving, walking in the park, doing sports or other outdoor activities. As active people need proper hydration anywhere and anytime, DEVIN Water2GO offers quality and convenience in a 750 ml bottle and is available in two versions – mineral and spring water.
Purchasing bottled water with unknown origin poses risks to the health of consumers. For example, water may contain bacteria; it might be bottled from a source other than the one indicated at the label; it might not comply with the necessary hygiene requirements; it might be offered without quality certificate or even have an unpleasant taste due to improper product storage.
How can you check the quality and origin of the water you buy to guarantee the health of your employees?
Industry experts recommend that we follow the above mentioned measures and do not trust unknown water suppliers. And if we buy water of dubious quality, or we find that one of the listed items is missing, please contact a licensed official supplier who will guarantee you long-term commitment by concluding a contract and provide you with a high-quality product and a constant maintenance.
* The data summarize the responses of 90 companies, members of the Bulgarian Association for Management of People, interviewed between 4 and 14 June 2018

“Sufficient water intake is among the most important factors in the prevention of kidney diseases, for keeping good tonus, and as part of the recovery process after surgery interventions. We are delighted to launch this campaign as a good example and a reminder for regular hydration and healthy habits at Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital” – Dr. Kaloyan Davidov, Head of Urology Department and Medical Director of Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital commented.
Water is vital for the proper functioning of the human body. It is responsible for all processes in the organism, including for the metabolism. That’s why good hydration helps our overall health. Water is necessary to maintain normal body temperature, physical and mental activity, preservation of our skin, beauty and health, recovery after surgery or viral diseases, etc. Water supplies us with energy and strength, increases the mood and the resistance of human body.
Nearly 75% of the human body is water: for the brain this percentage is 73% and for the blood – 92%. Therefore, insufficient hydration can cause headaches, mood swings, difficulty remembering, muscle pain, fatigue and distress.
On the other hand, sufficient water intake during the day has a beneficial effect on the overall condition of the body, it contributes to the tonus, energy and durability, as well as the elasticity of the skin, hair and nails, proper metabolism and maintenance of optimal weight.
Our needs of water are individual, but to be healthy, energetic and in good shape, specialists advise to take at least 1.5 – 2 liters per day. This amount may increase in the summer, as hot temperatures cause extra cost in the body’s water balance. To recover it’s recommended to intake additional water, which is a completely natural product with proven health benefits.

Fear of obesity is a problem for ¾ of women and for over half of men in the country. Nearly 40% of women are worried about showing on the beach in swimsuits and generally want to improve their figure, while this percentage for men is only 17%.
The three most popular ways to tackle extra kilograms among Bulgarians are: observing special diet; increased physical activity and sufficient water intake. 76% of respondents believe water also helps improve health condition. Men say that in the summer they drink an average of 2.6 liters of water, while women drink nearly 2.1 liters. For comparison, in the wintertime water consumption is almost half as low.
“The World Health Organization recommends consuming up to 2.9 liters for men and up to 2.2 liters for women during the summer period. The necessity for regular and balanced diet is valid in any season, but in the summer it’s good to take enough liquids, do sports and spend more time in nature”, Dr. Rayna Stoyanova, a dietitian and expert on healthy diet, comments.
Experts claim we can take off a few pounds just by replacing all other drinks – alcoholic, non-alcoholic or sweet soft drinks – with water. It’s a pure, natural product and does not contain calories. In addition, water purifies the body, helps to eliminate the unnecessary substances and degrades fat naturally.
Water is an essential part of any complex diet program. It’s recommended to drink a glass of water 15-30 minutes before eating and 1-1.5 hours after that.
According to Dr. Stoyanova, the increased water intake not only purifies human body but also leads to better mood and overall spirit. And when, if not in the summer, to enjoy the perfect shape?
